Popeye History
Popeye made his debut as a comic in 1929 and quickly became very popular amongst readers. Popeye has been depicted in a number of different ways over the years but most of his person characters have remained consistent.
Some of the keys to the Popeye character are his muscular forearms, his “one eye”, his corncob pipe and his anchor tattoos (a times over the years he’s had just one).
Popeye’s long time wife (over 77 years) is Olive Oil. Olive Oyl and Popeye have at times often had a heated relationship but have stayed together throughout the years regardless. Popeye and Olive Oyl have an adopted daughter called Sweet Pea.
Another one of Popeye’s famous traits is his super human strength. His strength has been shown to grow when he eats “a href=”http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spinach”>Spinach. Popeye’s mighty strength has been tested many times by Bluto (Popeyes arch enemy).
Bluto has regularly appeared in the comic and cartoon series, always as Popeye’s nemesis. The two regularly come to blows when Popeye gets fed up with being antagonized by Bluto.
Popeye has been depicted in not only Popeye comics and cartoons. He has also been the star of movies and video games. Robin Williams starred as Popeye in the 1980 Popeye movie. Popeye has also been adapted and aired on radio at times throughout the years.
Tracing Back Popeye
Popeye, the sailor man, has been one of the well loved comic book and cartoon series of many kids all over the world. He was created by Elzie Crisler Segar and he first appeared in Thimble Theater in 1929.
He started as a comic strip fictional character who was a middle aged sailor who had a distinct way of speaking. He had thin red hair and very muscular forearms that were quite disproportionate to his body. He also had two anchor tattoos on his arm and is never seen without his corncob pipe. Every time he needed extra strength, he would chow down on some spinach and instantly become stronger.
From being a comic strip character, Popeye eventually spawned into other media forms like animated series, video games and films. It was in 1960 when he was first seen on TV and it became a great hit. Kids watched the show with such excitement and vigor that it became a regular animated series on TV.
Popeye’s journey has certainly been colorful over the past decades and though not much of his series are being shown anymore, his character will remain in existence for many more years to come. And kids and adults will continue to love the show and the comics for as long as eternity.
